The North
Shattuck Association will present the 2nd Annual Spice of Life Festival on
Sunday October 17, 2004 in the heart of North Berkeley’s ‘Gourmet Ghetto’.
The blocks of Shattuck Ave. from Virginia to Vine Sts., and on Vine St.
from Shattuck to Walnut St. are the site for this premier food and arts
festival, which draws over 10,000 people from the immediate area and the
region and highlights the retail area’s community of high-quality food
purveyors, artisans, health practitioners, and unique independent
merchants.
This year’s
Spice of Life Festival will feature:
~ Live
music featuring performances presented by Berkeley’s renowned
Jazzschool
~ Flamenco
and other dance performances by local artists hosted by Café de la Paz
~ Fine
food offerings from area restaurants and food purveyors including The
Cheeseboard and Cesar
~ Cooking
demonstrations by gourmet restaurateurs on our chef and culinary arts
stage
~ Sampling
and sales of dozens of fine food products including Narsai’s Gourmet
Condiments
~ Wine and
beer tasting & sales featuring local and regional
producers
~ An
all-organic Farmer’s Market presented by the Ecology Center of
Berkeley
~ Original
art, ceramics, and jewelry by members of the Arts and Crafts Collective
(ACCI) and over 50 other selected Bay Area artisans and crafters
~ Book
readings, signings & sales featuring culinary, health, travel and
literary authors hosted by Black Oak Books and Easygoing Travel &
Books
~ A
children’s area with arts & crafts activities, storytelling, pony
rides and farm animals
~ A silent
auction of goods and services from area businesses to benefit the Chez
Panisse Foundation’s Edible Schoolyard Project and Berkeley High
School’s Community Partnership Academy
In addition
to numerous area businesses and restaurants, other vendors and exhibitors
include local schools, realtors, health practitioners, and non-profit
organizations presenting information on health issues, organic gardening
and sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting, social activism,
and Berkeley history.
The Spice of
Life Festival is promoted through a variety of media and organizational
outlets, including local newspapers, radio, and the internet.
